  • Mobile home fire claims life

    A 46-year-old Las Vegas woman perished in a mobile home fire early Wednesday morning after managing to get her daughter out of the burning structure.

    The fire erupted at the Enchanted Hills Mobile Home Park off Seventh Street at about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

    The Las Vegas Fire Department declined to release the name or gender of the person who died, saying that the Office of the Medical Investigator would need to make a positive identification. But family and friends identified her as Sonia Baca, a mother of three and waitress at Estella’s Cafe.

  • Updated: Associate AD suspect in sexual assault

    Authorities are investigating a New Mexico Highlands University administrator for sexual assault after a university employee reported that the administrator made unwanted sexual advances toward him and grabbed his genitals earlier this month.

  • Parade, luminaria tour this Saturday

    Las Vegas will be aglow on Saturday evening with thousands lining  streets for the city’s annual Electric Light Parade and countless others flocking to Camp Luna for “La Noche de las Luminarias.”

    Both events start at 6 p.m., with the parade beginning on Second Street and Mills Avenue and the luminaria tour taking place on Luna Community College’s campus.

    Both Luna Community College and the city of Las Vegas have worked together again this year to ensure that both events are attended.

    Friday, Nov. 30 —Songs from Mexico and Spain will be presented under the auspices of HU Newman Center Friday, with HU graduates Mariline Bustos and Arturo Gonzales among the singers. Miss Bustos is now teaching in Pojoaque schools, and Gonzales is now teaching in Albuquerque. Bustos will be remembered here for her Spanish music. She has made a number of records. Gonzales, known here for his singing and guitar playing, is a graduate of HU and received his master’s degree at HU.

    Annual Holiday Musical at the city museum, 1:30 p.m. this Saturday at the museum on Grand Avenue. The West Las Vegas Middle and High School choirs, under the direction of Sarah Oliver Tenorio, will perform sing-along musical selections while accompanied by Ann Mishler on the square grand piano.
