  • Ex-reporter sought in extortion case

    SUNLAND PARK — A former freelance journalist for a Spanish-language El Paso newspaper is wanted in a topless dancer extortion case surrounding a troubled New Mexico border city’s mayoral election.

  • Howell sworn in early

    Newly elected City Councilor Vince Howell was sworn in Friday to the surprise of many, including the councilor he replaced and some members of the governing body.

    City Attorney Dave Romero had previously said that the winner of the Ward 2 race wouldn’t take his position on the council until after the mayoral and Ward 3 races were decided in a runoff. No runoff was needed in the Ward 2 race because Howell received 67 percent of the vote, well above the 50 percent plus one vote margin required by the new city charter.

    In late December, Las Vegas City Schools board member Gloria Lovato-Pacheco voted against awarding contracts for cafeteria food products to several vendors, saying she wants healthier foods served to students.  

    At that time she said she wanted the district to serve more fruits and vegetables to students and less pre-processed foods.

    In response to Lovato-Pacheco’s concerns, board members Ernesto Salazar and Elaine Luna wrote up a directive to interim Superintendent Sheryl McNellis-Martinez asking for healthier cafeteria food.

  • Comic Relief

    Las Vegas native Jose Maestas will hit the stage on Saturday as master of ceremonies for the East vs. West High School Competition by University Celebrity.

    Maestas, a stand-up comedian, said he is looking forward to being back in Las Vegas for this one-evening competition starting at 7 p.m. with the doors opening at 6 p.m. this Saturday at Ilfeld Auditorium.

    “I’m excited to be back in Las Vegas,” Maestas said. “I like to bring my hard-core “brownie” jokes.

  • Highlands interns making a difference

    Two New Mexico Highlands University social work students interning at Big Brothers Big Sisters are having a big impact on the number of kids the nonprofit serves in San Miguel and Mora counties.

    Alexis Gonzalez will graduate in May with her bachelor’s degree and Scot Deily is pursuing his master’s.

In the Immaculate Conception church, the “Stations,” as the devotion is sometimes called, are said Friday evenings.

  • East official remains on leave

    Las Vegas City Schools Finance Director Myrna Garcia will remain on administrative leave though the end of the fiscal year, though school district officials remain mum on the reason.

    To pick up the slack, the district has contracted with Teresa Casias of Wagon Mound and Theresa Barreras of Tucumcari. Casias and Barreras were each given a $50,000 contract  to oversee the district’s finances.

    Casias is currently employed by Wagon Mound Schools as business manager.
