    Monday, Jan. 14 — Lionel Taylor, former Highlands University football and basketball luminary, grabbed three passes in the AFL East-West game. The final pass, heaved by Denver Bronco teammate Frank Tripucka, won the game for the West.

  • Officers prepare for worst

    The Dec. 14 Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut has reignited fears locally and throughout the country about how safe students are in their schools.

    The tragedy is a reminder of how quickly an active shooter can wreak havoc on a community and has left many wondering whether law enforcement agencies and schools are prepared to handle a similar situation should it happen here. Killed in the Connecticut school shooting incident were 26 individuals, 20 of them first grade students.

  • Girl killed in 4-wheeler accident

    A young girl died Wednesday evening when a four-wheeler and a truck collided in Romeroville.

    State police didn’t immediately release the name of the girl who died, but multiple postings on the social media website Facebook identified the girl who died as Destiny Courtney Encinias.

    State Police Lt. Robert McDonald would only say that the girl who died was from Romeroville.

    He said she died when the four-wheeler ATV she was riding on collided with a 1990 Dodge pickup on the I-25 frontage road in Romeroville, just south of Las Vegas.

  • Music for the world - Ortiz enjoying success in Italy

    Mario Ortiz has made a name for himself thousands of miles from his hometown.

    The former area resident is now living in Milan, Italy, and pursuing a singing career. And he already has developed a strong fan base.

    Ortiz grew up listening to rancheras at the family home in San Miguel near Villanueva, but it wasn’t until he moved away that he began thinking about a career in music.

  • Mora manager reinstated

    MORA — Mora County Manager Thomas Sanchez’s time on administrative leave didn’t last long.

    The Mora County Commission voted Tuesday morning to rescind its Jan. 4 action placing Sanchez on leave. Tuesday’s reversal came after a 40-minute closed session in the commission’s regular meeting at the Mora school district administration building.

    The commission had originally listed “appointment of interim county manager” as an action item on Tuesday’s agenda but tabled that item early in the meeting.

  • Hitting the big screen - Acclaimed film ‘Bless Me, Ultima’ to show at Ilfeld

    New Mexico Highlands University will present the acclaimed film, “Bless Me, Ultima,” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20 in Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

    The PG-13 film will not be released nationally until Feb. 22.

    General admission tickets are $5. Tickets for children and students with ID are $3. There is also a free showing only for students, at 1 p.m. Jan. 18. Students must show valid ID.

    Sen. Campos faces challenge

    SANTA FE — Democratic Sen. Mary Kay Papen of Las Cruces says she’s confident of becoming the Senate’s top leader next week when the Legislature convenes.
    Papen told reporters on Wednesday in Santa Fe that she has a majority of the votes in the 42-member Senate in her bid to become Senate president pro tem. She expects the backing of all 17 Republicans as well as seven to 10 Democrats.
