  • Block due in state court

    The Associated Press

    Former Public Regulation Commissioner Jerome Block Jr. is heading back to court after being jailed last week and dismissed from a drug treatment program.

    Block is scheduled for a release hearing Thursday in state district court.

    The hearing could determine whether he will be released from jail in Santa Fe pending his sentencing.

    Block faces up to 4 1/2 years in prison.

Barker’s Christmas dinner last night is possessed of plenty of nerve. Leaving a quantity of groceries in his wagon at the hitchrack of the Gross Kelly company on Railroad Avenue, Mr. Barker went to the Santa Fe depot last evening to meet train No. 10. When he returned his wagon was gone.

    The city of Las Vegas Solid Waste Transfer station will close at noon today, Dec. 23, and will reopen on Tuesday, Dec. 27, for the Christmas holiday. There will not be a trash pick-up on Saturday or Monday. For more information, call 426-3217.

  • City gets negative audit

    For the second year in a row independent auditors poring over the city of Las Vegas’ books were unable to say whether the city’s financial statements are accurate.

    The latest audit covers the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2010.

    Blizzard-like conditions stranded holiday travelers in Las Vegas, left area hotels full, forced the cancellation of sporting events and allowed students and teachers at Las Vegas City Schools to start their holiday break a little early this year.

  • Local man faces seventh DWI charge

    A Las Vegas man whose breath alcohol content was more than 2- 1/2 times the state’s presumed level of intoxication was arrested earlier this month on his seventh drunken driving charge, according to court documents.

    Leonard R. Montoya, 45, of the 1000  block of Tilden, has been charged with aggravated DWI, seventh offense, a third-degree felony, and with misdemeanor counts of driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving with an open container, making an improper turn at an intersection and failing to stay in his lane.
