    Martin Montoya paintings on display

    An exhibition of paintings by Martin Montoya is being held at New Mexico Highlands University’s Ray Drew Gallery. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 28.

  • West superintendent resigns

    Two years after taking the helm of the West Las Vegas School District, Superintendent Ruben Cordova has notified the district that he plans to leave the post.

    District officials confirmed that Cordova submitted a resignation letter to the board on Wednesday. The letter states that Cordova’s last day as superintendent will be Sept. 30.

    “I am very saddened,” board member Christine Ludi told the Optic Thursday afternoon. “He has done so much for us.”

  • Brewery to open in Las Vegas

    Las Vegas is on the verge of getting its first brewery.
    New Mexico Craft Brewing is planning to establish the brewery at 1212 Railroad Avenue.
    The City Council last month unanimously signed off on the company’s request for a small brewers liquor license and a beer wholesalers liquor license.

  • Artists reception slated

    Aristotle wrote that the aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. The up-coming art event in La Tienda Art Exhibit Space at Eldorado touches on Aristotle’s view in interesting ways.

    The artists who will be featured in the month-long exhibit express the inward significance of their work with a variety of media and styles.

    The Northern Nine group show opened Friday and runs until Sept. 25, with an artists’ reception set for Saturday, Sept. 8 from 4-7 p.m.

  • Fracas at Highlands leads to arrest

    A 21-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested and booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on Tuesday because of an incident that occurred last Friday on the New Mexico Highlands University campus.
    Highlands police prepared an arrest warrant affidavit for Joseph R. Dominguez accusing him of battery on a peace officer, fleeing from police and public affray.
    The affidavit states that a fight broke out at a dance at the Sala de Madrid last Friday and that when those in the crowd saw the Highlands officer approach, they left the building.
