  • Murder suspect dies in Mora

    An Albuquerque man suspected of gunning down his neighbor in a jealous rage fled to Mora County where he suffered a fatal gunshot wound  after ramming his vehicle into a parked sheriff’s unit on Tuesday, state police said.

    Wesley Brannon, 44, died of a gunshot wound at the scene, though it’s unclear whether he was killed by police or whether he took his own life, authorities said.

    The harrowing ordeal played out over about seven hours on Tuesday morning.

  • Local bank changing its name

    In about a month The Bank of Las Vegas signs around town will come down and new ones will go up showcasing the company’s new name: Southwest Capital Bank.

    But Greg W. Levenson, the bank’s president and chief executive  officer, says the institution remains as committed to Las Vegas as ever.

    The new name officially takes effect March 12.

    “Come in March 12. You’ll see we’re 100 percent the same,” Levenson  said, adding that the only difference will be the name.

  • City issues warning on insurance offer

    The city’s utilities director is warning its water customers to beware of a mailer sent out offering insurance that will cover problems with the water line on their property.

    “What I’d like to let our town know — especially the older people — is that it’s not legitimate and it’s not normal for customers to have to pay insurance for their service line,” Utilities Director Ken Garcia said.

  • Man killed in suspected DWI crash

    A passenger in a 1984 Datsun pickup died after a two-vehicle collision last Friday afternoon at Grand and Lincoln avenues in Las Vegas.

    The driver of the Datsun was arrested by state police for suspicion of driving while intoxicated and homicide by vehicle.

    Salvation Army Fashion Show is this Sunday

    The second annual Salvation Army Fashion Show will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Ilfeld Ballroom at the Plaza Hotel. The event highlights clothes taken directly from the Salvation Army. The outfits will be modeled by local volunteers. Tickets are $15 and the proceeds will go to benefit the Las Vegas Salvation Army.
