  • Drought challenging refuge

    The rains of the last two weeks have been a welcome sight for the drought stricken Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge. But even with slightly more than two inches of precipitation recently the refuge is still suffering as the drought marches across the state.

    The refuge has been taking precautions for the past several years as the worst drought in 50 years continues.

  • Council hikes sewer rates

    The Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously last week to increase sewer rates, but it postponed action on just how large of a water rate increase to implement.

    The proposed steep increases in water rates is the item that has drawn the most attention since the city unveiled the proposed rate hikes, but the council opted to hold off on voting on the recommended increases until alternatives can be developed and presented for consideration.

  • Head Start changes irk West board

    Las Vegas City Schools’ decision to switch to a four-day week is affecting not only their district but also the West Las Vegas School District.

    Already the West district has had to change the operations of its Head Start classes held at Los Niños Elementary on the east side, a move that the West board isn’t happy about.

  • NM revises Medicaid overhaul plan

    SANTA FE — Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration asked the federal government on Friday to approve a revised plan to overhaul a program providing health care for a fourth of New Mexico’s population.

  • PNM center to be open 2 days a week

    Nine months after announcing that it planned to close its payment centers in Las Vegas and in several other communities, PNM has reached a compromise of sorts.

    The utility announced last week that its payment centers will shift from being open weekdays to two days per week beginning Sept. 17.

    The Las Vegas payment center will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Monday, Aug. 20 — The banquet given  the local American Legion posts in honor of the visiting baseball players taking part in the Pacific Southwest tournament was well attended Saturday evening. The Old Armory on Douglas Ave. was filled almost to capacity by those who came to meet the visiting players and Legion officials and to hear Rep. Jack Campbell make an address. Sam Vigil served as master of ceremonies.
