  • Official: Ordinance violated

    Recently, Las Vegas resident Robert Jones complained to the City Council about his sewer bill, saying he didn’t know where else to go.

    Now he’s got an answer.

    George DuFour, the city’s utilities director, told the council last week that the city had been violating its own ordinance in charging for sewer service.

    At a previous meeting, Jones reported that he used only around 800 gallons of water in a month’s time recently, but was charged for a whopping 8,000 gallons of sewage.

  • Graduates going separate ways

    Highlands University students Ashley Ramirez and Rebecca Sena shared classes in political science. Now they’re going their separate ways.

    Ramirez of Carlsbad and Sena of Las Vegas talked together Saturday as they stood in a long, narrow hallway with graduates waiting for the commencement ceremony to begin. They were preparing to collect their bachelor of arts degrees in political science.

  • Brothers arrested in assaults

    Two brothers have been arrested in connection with assaulting two people at a gasoline station in the Valley, state police said.

    The two suspects are Richard Joseph Griego, 21, and Christopher Griego, 19, both of whom live in Villanueva, state police said. They face charges of robbery, two counts of assault, conspiracy and burglary.

    According to Magistrate Court documents, one of the alleged victims reported that he was at the Sunshine Station in Villanueva shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

  • Luna Rough Riders ride it out

    Luna Community College students crossed the stage Saturday morning to celebrate their 2008 commencement.

    About 700 audience members cheered on the 141 graduates who walked the line, with 73 members of the class graduating in absentia.

    The Rev. John C. Brasher of Our Lady of Sorrows gave the invocation.

    “We ask health for the graduateseeso that they themselves can always serve you faithfully in their chosen fields,” Brasher said. “May they prosper with the work of their hands all the days of their lives.”

  • Official: Customer service a problem

    A top official says the city’s billing department has a problem with customer service. And he’s promising to make improvements.

    George DuFour, the city’s utilities director, said the city plans to move the billing department to his offices on 12th Street by the beginning of June. In a couple of weeks, the city will close the department for a couple of days to make the move from City Hall.

  • Times owner accused of defacing car

    Las Vegas newspaper owner Chris Lopez was arrested early this morning after allegedly being caught defacing a car belonging to Optic managing editor David Giuliani.

    The incident occurred outside Giuliani’s home on New Mexico Avenue. A neighbor called police after seeing Lopez and another man using shoe polish to write “Rapist,” “Rapist will Pay” and a gang symbol on the car, according to a police report.

  • Judge looking at state police building

    For years, the Las Vegas Municipal Court has been seeking a new building because the current one is not handicapped-accessible.

    Municipal Judge Eddie Trujillo may have found a solution.

    This week, the judge told the City Council that state Sen. Pete Campos, D-Las Vegas, recently informed him that the state police were looking to build a new facility and that the court could possibly use the state agency’s building on Mills Avenue.

  • HU, Luna to hold graduations

    Gov. Bill Richardson will be the commencement speaker for Highlands University’s graduation on Saturday. His last public appearance in Las Vegas was in 2006, before his run for president.

    The graduation is set for 2 p.m. in the school’s Wilson Complex. More than 300 students are expected to graduate.

    At Luna Community College’s graduation, state Health Secretary Alfredo Vigil will speak at the event, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday in a large tent on campus.

  • District expects strains on budget

    West Las Vegas is facing a number of strains on its budget, but a top official doesn’t expect any layoffs in the coming year.

    Jim Abreu, the school district’s superintendent, said West Las Vegas will do what it takes to avoid layoffs, which he called a “last resort.” He noted that last year, the district cut the days of employment contracts to save money as a way of preventing layoffs.

  • DA says sex offender not exiled

    A Mora County man convicted of inappropriately touching a number of underage victims left the area this week, but District Attorney Richard Flores maintains that authorities aren’t “exiling” him.

    Flores took exception to comments in the media from Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez and Rio Rancho Mayor Tom Swisstack that his office is dumping a sex offender in those communities.
