    Tuesday, Dec. 10 — City Council at a lengthy meeting last night discussed a number of items, including a letter from Msgr. George V. Rieffer suggesting the changing of the name of Grand Avenue to Kennedy Boulevard. The council agreed that they do not want to change the name of the City’s Grand Ave. However, they agreed to consider the name of Kennedy Freeway for the new Interstate 25 bypass of Las Vegas. The Rev. Rieffer is pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church in East Las Vegas.

    Bird count Saturday
    The 114th National Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at Charlie’s Spic and Span at 7 a.m. to be assigned an area to monitor. Participants should also take warm clothes and snacks and bring a pair of binoculars and bird guides, if available.

    The swimming pool at the Abelino Montoya Recreation Center will be closed until further notice due to a mechanical failure. Technicians are working to fix the problem, said Loretta Abreu Martin, the director of the recreation center.

  • ‘Greatest feeling ever’

    Robertson, led by head coach Leroy Gonzalez, completed a Cinderella season by dominating Silver 34-7.

    “This is the greatest feeling ever,” exuberant lineman Andrew Ellis said as he and fellow members of the Robertson High School football team celebrated a Class 3A state championship on the frozen tundra of Cardinal Stadium.

    The championship is the program’s third in school history and the first since the Cardinals won back-to-back titles in 2005 and ‘06.

  • Bone-chilling cold - Weather wreaks havoc

    With the exception of the Class 3A state football championship won by the Robertson High School Cardinals over Silver City, last week’s storm curtailed a host of activities.

    Public schools called off classes Thursday and Friday, scores of regularly scheduled meetings were cancelled or postponed, and even the popular Electric Light Parade, scheduled for Dec. 7, was postponed until 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21.

  • Man accused of killing uncle

    A 56-year-old Las Vegas man was found dead in his home Saturday morning, and the man’s 39-year-old nephew has been arrested and charged in the case.

    Details in the case remain sketchy. It’s unclear what led to the homicide and exactly how the victim was killed
    Las Vegas police said late Saturday that the deceased man was Arthur Quintana, and the identifying information they released for him reveals that he was found dead on his birthday.

    Tuesday, Dec. 10 — Commenting upon the recent discharge of a hospital employee charged with procuring intoxicants for patients, Dr. Daniel Joubert, superintendent of the New Mexico State Hospital said: “I am planning to get real tough with persons doing these sorts of acts.” The superintendent also remarked that in the past, such dismissals (for bringing in liquor or drugs) had been handled quietly, but that he was convinced publicity would warn other potential violators of the consequences of such actions.

    The Survivors of Victims of Homicide group will line up for its candlelight vigil, in front of the Las Vegas Peace and Justice building, 719 Sixth St. Participants will meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13. The group will walk to the Plaza Park.
