    Story Time at Carnegie Library is held at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. each Wednesday in the children’s area of the public library. This week’s book is “Ollie’s Easter Eggs” by Olivier Dunrea. Story Time is free and open to the public.

    Below are some of the government agencies, banks and schools that will be closed or have an early closure on Friday in observance of Good Friday.
    • City of Las Vegas offices: Closing on noon on Friday
    • Trash pickup: All trash removal should be done prior to Friday, however, if there is a problem, call 429-0214
    • Abelino Montoya Recreation Center: Open until 5 p.m. on Friday and regular hours on Saturday, closed Sunday
    • Carnegie Public Library: Closing at noon on Friday, open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday

  • Area Head Start facing cuts

    HOLMAN — Mora-Colfax Head Start is asking area residents to contact their federal elected officials and ask them to end the budget stalemate that is threatening their budget and that could force them to reduce the number of students they serve.

  • Ex-judge, DA among applicants for judicial post

    Five attorneys, including District Attorney Richard D. Flores and former judge Gerald E. Baca are asking to be considered to fill the post left vacant by the resignation last month of Judge Eugenio Mathis.

    Other applicants are Anna M. Aragon, Floripa Gallegos and Suzanne Gaulin, all of whom practice law in Las Vegas.

  • Settlement reached on ‘river of tires’

    A settlement has been reached on the massive tire dump near Wagon Mound.

    On Friday, State Land Commissioner Ray Powell and state Environment Secretary Dave Martinez announced a global settlement among the state government entities, Daniels Ranches and Kansas Equity Investments.

    The massive tire dump, which has an estimated 300,000 scrap tires, will get cleaned up as part of the agreement, according to a news release from the State Land Office. The agreement calls for the tires to be removed.
