  • Activist sues county clerk

    An attorney for a local activist who is fighting to keep oil and gas drilling out of San Miguel County has filed suit against County Clerk Melanie Rivera, arguing that her refusal to sign off on a home rule petition is a violation of state law.

  • East hopefuls discuss 4-day week, merger

    Las Vegas City Schools board candidates faced off in a forum on Wednesday evening.

    The hot topic of the forum was the four-day school week the district enacted this school year after a split board vote in late June.

    Participating in Wednesday’s forum were: Position 1 candidates Ernesto J. Salazar and Sean Medrano; Gabe Lucero, who is running unopposed for his current Position 2 seat; and Position 5 candidates: Luis Ortiz, Alexis Mamaux and Carlos A. Perea.

  • Opening Act - West student wins singing contest

    Sarah Lewis’ last-minute decision to audition on Saturday has landed her a chance to be the opening act during well-known country singer Matt Mason’s upcoming concert.

    Lewis’ mother, Shannon Trujillo, persuaded her daughter to pull her guitar out of its case and audition just moments before the Young Country Singer Competition held on Saturday afternoon at Ilfeld Auditorium.

  • Two jailed on drug trafficking charges

    The Region IV Narcotics Task Force arrested and charged two area residents with drug trafficking in recent days after conducting search warrants.

    Lucille Martinez, 56, was arrested on Jan. 24 after a search warrant was conducted at her home on the 1500 block of Romero Street.

    She is charged with trafficking crack cocaine, a second-degree felony, and tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.

    Police say several people were at the home at the time the warrant was executed.

    In 1963

    Friday, Feb. 1, — Moved off its foundation by the strong wind in Las Vegas Thursday morning, a 55-foot long trailer belonging to Max Ferguson, a graduate student at Highlands University from Kansas, shifted six feet in the front end. Resting on concrete blocks, the trailer was parked in the 200 block of Baca Avenue. Ferguson said, “I thought the wind blew in Kansas.” The airport reported winds up to 50 mph.
