Robertson High School student Alicia Leger left for Singapore and will spend her senior and college freshman years halfway around the world.

That happened after she was nominated as a Davis Scholar to attend United World College in Singapore. United World Colleges are located around the world, including at Montezuma.

The U.S. selection committee for the UWC considered nearly 400 applications, interviewed about one quarter of them and nominated only 50 students from across the nation.

The Mora school board has decided to proceed with the original project for a multipurpose sports complex, despite an official’s recommendation for a third-party investigation of a water problem at the site.

Superintendent Dora Romero recently recommended that the board hire a third-party engineer “in order to gain perspective as to what actually needs to be done to remedy our situation.”

That recommendation was in response to the discovery of a problem with water bubbling up from the ground at the site.

Jacobo Rael wants what most Las Vegas residents have — a paved street. He and his neighbors hope to make that a reality.

He told the City Council last week that his street — San Pedro Drive — was paved a long time ago but that it has since entirely crumbled, making it extra bumpy.

He said the street has been graded twice in the last decade. The last time was the day of last week’s council meeting, which was after he told city staff that he would bring the matter to the council.

A former secretary with the city is suing her former employer, alleging breach of contract and wrongful retaliatory discharge.

Pearl Maes, who worked for the city from 2000 to 2006, filed a lawsuit in June naming the city of Las Vegas as a defendant.

In the lawsuit, Maes, represented by Albuquerque attorney Gilbert Vigil, alleges that she always accomplished her “overwhelming workload” as the secretary to the city manager. But she contends that she was subjected to a “hostile and intimidating work environment.”
