    A story in Wednesday’s Optic quoted San Miguel County Detention Center Warden Patrick Snedeker saying that inmate Katalina Leyba was Pamela Leyba’s niece. Katalina Leyba’s sister, Tanya Leyba, said that her sister and Pamela Leyba are not related.

  • Tainted heroin alert issued

    The San Miguel County Detention Center and its health care provider have issued a warning that tainted heroin is suspected in the death of one former inmate and in three other inmates becoming ill and having to be rushed to Alta Vista Regional Hospital.

    Warden Patrick Snedeker said Monday that there’s no doubt in his mind that contaminated heroin is responsible for what he and his staff have seen over the last few weeks. They suspect that the heroin has been mixed with bath salts.

  • Ex-cop accused of bribery

    The former Las Vegas police officer who was arrested and charged last September with fraud and other crimes is back in jail on new charges.

    Shawn Montoya, 41, of the 700 block of Dora Celeste, was arrested last week on multiple felonies and misdemeanors. Court documents allege that Montoya once again forged documents to make it appear as though he was a licensed contractor in good standing.

  • City investing in ballpark upgrades

    The city of Las Vegas has begun investing in improvements to its Rodriguez Park complex to spruce it up for the Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs.

    The City Council earlier this month signed off on two measures. The first one was awarding a bid to Rio Rancho-based Carreon Construction for decorative fencing and a gate for the front of the park. The bid was for $63,300. City councilors voted unanimously to approve that measure during a special meeting on March 1.

  • Supreme Court takes up gay bias case

    SANTA FE — In a case that tests anti-discrimination protection for gays, a religious rights group told the New Mexico Supreme Court on Monday that a photographer who declined to shoot the commitment ceremony of a lesbian couple was exercising her rights to free speech and artistic freedom.

    The First Amendment should exempt Elaine Huguenin and her Albuquerque business, Elane Photography, from state laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, Jordan Lorence of the Alliance Defending Freedom told the high court.
