  • Obama meets with Senate Dems

    WASHINGTON — Senators from President Barack Obama’s own party pressed him in person on Wednesday to extend the enrollment deadline for Americans to sign up for health insurance because of the malfunctioning website.

    Obama invited Senate Democrats facing re-election next year to the White House to discuss the problem-plagued health care rollout that could affect their races.

    The night before Alex Montoya and Cochise Bayhan died, Denise Encinias says she gave them their medications at 8:30 p.m. and asked them to put on their pajamas.

    The two had been staying in an outbuilding behind the Encinias home.

    Encinias said she went back to the “apartment” at about 10 p.m. to tell Montoya, 61, and Bayhan, 56, to go to bed. The two were relaxing on a couch.

  • Luna sponsoring coat drive

    Luna Community College students led by both student government and the student nurses association are conducting an “LCC Cares Coat Drive.”

    Although the emphasis will be on coats, any article of cold weather clothing, such as hats, gloves, and scarves are welcome.

    Items will be distributed Nov. 23. The last day to donate a coat and other items will be Nov. 22.

    ALBUQUERQUE — John McCluskey is not the vicious pit bull or three-time loser that prosecutors have made him out to be, according to his defense attorneys. Rather, they said Monday that the Arizona inmate convicted of killing an Oklahoma couple while on the run in New Mexico is a remorseful animal lover unable to properly reason because of his abusive childhood and brain defects.

    Wednesday, Nov. 6 — The Student Madrigal Choir of the University of Muenster, Muenster, West Germany, will present a choral concert at Ilfeld Auditorium Saturday, under the sponsorship of Highlands University. The 57-voice choir is touring the United States for the third time and has made 12 highly successful European tours as well, according to Ronald Wynn, Highlands’ choir director.

  • No injuries in drive-by shooting

    A Toyota Camry and at least one business on Sixth Street were hit with bullets early Friday morning in what Las Vegas police are investigating as a drive-by.

    There were no injuries, and police have yet to arrest a suspect in the case, said Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño.

    The incident occurred on the 500 block of Sixth Street near Grand Avenue at about 1 a.m. A Toyota Camry parked there had multiple bullet holes and a shattered rear window. The front glass window of Outback Firearms also had a bullet hole.
