  • It’s official - Gov signs Bradner funding

    Water storage capabilities have been a long-running issue in Las Vegas for years. On Tuesday, Gov. Susana Martinez signed a bill appropriating $10 million to increase the storage capacity of Bradner Reservoir. The signing was part of a celebration on at Plaza Park. Martinez said that although the amount falls short of the city’s goal of $16 million, she has a plan for the additional $6 million. The signed bill is an $89 million capital outlay bill to improve the dilapidated drinking water infrastructure throughout the state.

  • Candidates file for June primary

    Barring an unlikely challenge from a third-party, independent or write-in candidate, San Miguel County Clerk Melanie Rivera will sail into office as a magistrate judge, facing no opposition in the June primary or November’s general election.

    Rivera, a Democrat, is the only candidate who filed Tuesday to run for San Miguel County’s Division 2 magistrate post.

    That seat is currently held by Chris Najar, who is retiring when his term ends on Dec. 31.

    The primary election is on June 3, with the general election taking place in November.

  • Enrollment reaches 15K

    SANTA FE — The Obama administration reports about 15,000 New Mexicans have signed up for health insurance plans through a federal online marketplace during its first five months of operation.

    The enrollment figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showed about 3,400 people signed up during February. Open enrollment ends this month.

    New Mexico is using the federally operated website to enroll individuals. Businesses can enroll through a state-run exchange.

  • Gonzales’ fate now in hands of jury

    A Stafford County, Va., jury deliberated more than eight hours Wednesday without deciding whether FBI Special Agent Arthur Gonzales was justified when he killed his estranged wife last year at their home in North Stafford.

  • Gov. Martinez signs $6B state budget

    RIO RANCHO — Gov. Susana Martinez signed a $6 billion state budget on Tuesday, but she eliminated pay raises for judges, district attorneys and appointed government workers.

    Martinez cut spending about $27 million with line-item vetoes, including $2.4 million that lawmakers had provided for 8 percent salary increases for judges and district attorneys and about 3 percent raises for workers in appointed government positions.

  • Lottery scholarship fix now law

    SANTA FE — Gov. Susana Martinez signed a measure into law Wednesday to help avert possible reductions in a popular college scholarship program.

    The program relies on revenue from the state lottery, and cuts loomed because lottery proceeds haven’t kept pace with increases in college tuition.

  • Ex-legislators seek return to state House

    SANTA FE — Six former legislators filed Tuesday as candidates for the New Mexico House, setting up rematches from the 2012 primary and general elections.

    Among those former legislators are area residents Richard Vigil and Bengie Regensberg.

    All 70 House seats are up for election this year and 10 incumbents — five Democrats and five Republicans — aren’t seeking re-election.

    In 2012, a dozen House members voluntarily left or sought other offices.

  • Three seeking district judge post

    As expected, three Democrats have filed to run for the District Judge post previously held by Eugenio Mathis who retired last year.

    Gov. Susana Martinez appointed Gerald Baca to the 4th Judicial District’s Division 1 post last year, and he is now seeking election to hold onto the job.

    Also filing were longtime attorney Anna M. Aragon and attorney Suzanne Gaulin, who is a native of Canada.

  • 14 file in Mora

    Fourteen hopefuls have filed for positions in Mora County government.

    The race for Mora County Sheriff will be the most crowded, with five candidates. They are: Greg M. Laumbach, Donaciano Trujillo, Americk Padilla, Eugene Martin Garcia and Robert J. Torres. All are registered Democrats.

    Not seeking the post is current sheriff Amos Espinoza, who is serving out the remainder of former sheriff Thomas Garza’s term. Garza  resigned last year as part of a plea agreement.

  • Silon remembered for her generosity

    Carole Silon, the co-director of the Las Vegas Peace and Justice Center who made audiences laugh with her recurring portrayal of “Mayor Nanita” in the Nat Gold Players “Over the Edge” productions, died on March 7. She was 76.

    She had been battling colo-rectal and lung cancer since June 2012, according to Pat Leahan, a close friend and the other director of the Peace and Justice Center.

    Leahan said Silon, a retired educator, didn’t fear death.
