A 22-year-old Holman man died in a single-vehicle rollover on NM 518 outside of Mora around 6:30 a.m. Monday, according to Lt. Chris Blake of the State Police in Las Vegas.

Jonathan Lovato was apparently speeding in his 1993 Isuzu pickup when he missed a turn in the road, went down an embankment and rolled several times during which he was ejected.

A nearby homeowner heard the accident and upon investigating discovered Lovato and called for help, Blake said.

A pit bull that bit a woman numerous times in late April was ordered released from the pound and returned to its owner by Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge Eddie Trujillo.

“Normally I have zero tolerance for biting dogs and if this had happened on the streets, in a park or anywhere else in public I probably would have had it put down,” Trujillo said of the dog in the case. “But this was on private property, and I had to take that into consideration.”

WASHINGTON — Rural America is losing population for the first time ever, largely because of waning interest among baby boomers in moving to far-flung locations for retirement and recreation, according to new census estimates.

Long weighed down by dwindling populations in farming and coal communities and the movement of young people to cities, rural counties are being hit by sputtering growth in retirement and recreation areas, once residential hot spots for baby boomers.

Third annual Sunrise Kiwanis Outdoor Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center. The event will feature games, prizes, food, music, contests and educational displays. Free and open to the public.
