  • Trees vulnerable to bark beetles

    It is not difficult to notice that much of New Mexico has been experiencing a prolonged dry spell and the many results of the drought-related conditions.

    These include everything from increased fire activity to decreasing water reservoir levels and dying trees. While some aspects may be more noticeable than others, they can mainly be attributed to a lack of moisture.

  • AG: watch for scams

    The Associated Press
    Attorney General Gary King is warning New Mexicans about two scams targeting consumers.
    In one, King says, an operation out of California is using official-looking documents to convince homeowners to send payments to them instead of their lender. He says the mailings may state “Notice of HUD Relief.” The phone and mail claims offer “Making Home Affordable” or Housing and Urban Development loan modifications.

  • BREAKING — Gerald Baca tapped for judge post

    Gov. Susana Martinez announced this morning that she has appointed longtime Las Vegas attorney Gerald Baca to the 4th Judicial District Court bench.

    Baca replaces Judge Eugenio Mathis, who resigned in late February after being accused of misconduct.

  • After 16 years, judge retires

    Longtime San Miguel County Magistrate Judge, Philip Romero, 60, says he’s retiring at the end of the month after serving on the bench for more than 16 years.

    “I’m tired,” Romero says. “And then there’s my wife. She’s been after me for years to give it up. She doesn’t want me running again.”
