    SANTA FE — Limited safeguards against self-enrichment in the nation’s only unsalaried legislature are under scrutiny in the wake of a corruption trial and felony convictions against a former New Mexico state senator.

    Accused of using his position to profit from the sale of a state-owned building, former Sen. Phil Griego is awaiting sentencing after a jury found him guilty of fraud, felony ethical violations and other charges.

  • Police: Abq. man fired handgun near Las Vegas park

    A man was arrested in the early morning hours of Nov. 19 for discharging a weapon in a residential part of Las Vegas.

    Johnny Angel Arias, Jr., of Albuquerque was arrest shortly after 1:45 a.m. after Las Vegas Police received a call about shots fired in the area, and at least one officer heard shots fired himself.

    Nor did the Don Cecilio Martinez Elementary students allow chilly breezes to dampen their enthusiasm. They got to touch, peer inside, and step on the step rail of the Sky 7 News helicopter parked on the Herrera complex football field.

    Las Vegas Fire Department firefighters quickly responded Wednesday morning to a call about a fire at Bienvenidos, a boarding home located near the 1100 block of Tecolote Street.
