  • Montoya guilty of murder

    A San Miguel County jury on Tuesday opted not to convict Joseph “Wicked” Montoya of first-degree murder — the most serious crime he was facing — but found him guilty of a lesser murder charge and all of the other crimes he was charged with in the May 18, 2013, slaying of Angel Arroyo.

  • City: School can’t stay at Dee Bibb

    Citing concerns about safety, the city of Las Vegas has given Rio Gallinas Charter School until next Friday to move out of a building at Dee Bibb Industrial Park that is being used as a temporary site for middle school students and staff.

    The school has been without a permanent home since a fire damaged its former building on Socorro Street in May. Since the fire, students have moved from their sister location on Montezuma Street to the Presbyterian Building on Douglas Avenue to the industrial park location, where they have been since early September.

  • ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ - HU Singers take on Halloween

    Just in time for Halloween, the Highlands University HU Singers will present a Zombie House and a musical production of Nightmare Before Christmas.

    The Third Annual Zombie House has an Alice in Wonderland theme this year and is at 7 p.m. today through Sunday  at  the university’s Sala de Madrid, 801 University Ave.

    No children under 11 are admitted to Zombie House due to gore and realistic situations. The cost is $8.

    Friday, Oct. 23 — Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman today announced plans to extend the Food Stamp program to 41 states and the District of Columbia. Included are three more New Mexico counties. In New Mexico, three counties, Mora, San Miguel and Santa Fe, currently are in the program, but under Freeman’s announcement, the program will be expanded to include Rio Arriba, Sandoval and Taos counties.

  • Auditor race pits Senate majority whip, ex-Dem

    Unpaid tax bills, a barking dog, and even “Breaking Bad” references have made their way into a usually sleepy race for state auditor.

    And the winner will have to look out for corruption in New Mexico and monitor the financial affairs of hundreds of government agencies.

    State Sen. Tim Keller is going head-to-head against Republican lawyer Robert Aragon to replace State Auditor Hector Balderas, who can’t seek re-election because of term limits and is running for attorney general.

  • Race for treasurer draws education funding concerns

    The campaign to become the next New Mexico state treasurer has candidates talking about education and ways to gain more revenue.

    Democrat Tim Eichenberg is going against Republican Rick Lopez in a race to replace James Lewis, who can’t run again because of term limits.
