    RHS graduate recognized

    Charles Martinez, a 1997 graduate of Robertson High School, has been selected as one of the 2012 100 Extra Ordinary Nurses in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

    The nurses were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the nursing profession and the community.

    Martinez was nominated by Dr. Carolyn Harris for his compassion, clinical expertise and extraordinary care. Recipients of this award are recognized as outstanding role models in the nursing community.

  • Three accepted into research program

    Luna Community College

    Luna Community College students Justin Smith (electronic engineering major) and Rachel Ridgeway (physical sciences major) are two of 16 students throughout New Mexico who have been selected to participate in the Summer Community College Opportunity for Research Experience program for 2012.

    Justin and Rachel will spend a month in Las Cruces at New Mexico State University working as research assistants on a NMSU faculty member's cutting edge research project.

    Victoria Gomez of Robertson High has been selected as Rotary Student of the Month. Daughter of Placido and Maxine Gomez of Las Vegas, Victoria recently completed her junior year at Robertson.

    At Robertson, Victoria maintains a 4.0 GPA and is active in Key Club, National Honor Society, MESA, and on the school tennis team. She also participated in the Supercomputing Challenge and works part-time at Paul D. Henry Elementary as part of the 21st Century Program.

  • HU students receive scholarships

    Highlands University

    Five New Mexico Highlands University business students received scholarships from Bloomberg Businessweek for writing outstanding business case studies.

    Ryan Romero – An international business junior from Mora, won the $600 gold scholarship.

    Duong Nguyen – A finance sophomore from Hanoi, Vietnam won the $400 silver scholarship.

    Daniel Hern – An accounting junior from Dilia, won the $200 bronze scholarship.

  • Students of the Month - June 1, 2012

    Cassandra Miller, of West Las Vegas High School, was selected Elks Student of the month. Miller is the daughter of Dr. Franklin and Catherine Miller.

    At West, she participates in National  Honor Society, is yearbook editor, class president, cross country, and track. Some of her awards include being in the top five percent of the class and principal’s distinction. She holds a 3.97 GPA and recently graduated from the high school.

  • ACLU suit targets English learning

    DINUBA, Calif. — A group of teachers, parents and students sued a small Central Valley school district Wednesday, alleging its program to teach English to young elementary school children is ineffective and violates the students’ constitutional rights.

    Three chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union in California and other civil rights organizations filed the lawsuit against Dinuba Unified School District in Sacramento County Superior Court.
