Dalan Abreu, a 2012 Las Vegas Robertson High School graduate, has been selected as the recipient of the 31st Annual Michael William Marr Memorial Scholarship. The Marr Scholarship has been awarded annually since the 1981-82 school year to a Robertson student athlete who excelled academically and participated in the football program.

An outstanding scholar athlete and a leader on and off the field, Abreu participated in four sports and received many awards, including All- District and All-State honors in football and basketball. He served as football team captain.

Students protest abortion poster
ALBUQUERQUE — An anti-abortion poster depicting a fetus in an American Indian headdress has sparked a protest at the University of New Mexico.

New Mexico Highlands University student Elizabeth Gomez was awarded a $1,000 scholarship in memory of the late Bryan “Dutch” Cokeley, a media arts student who died in 2008.

Gomez, a Las Vegas resident who graduated from Robertson High School in 2003, is a senior with a double major in Spanish and media arts, with an emphasis in design.

Award-winning author and journalist Slim Randles wrote a Cowboy Code this summer for New Mexico Highlands University’s students.

“I was delighted and honored to be asked to write the Cowboy Code for Highlands,” Randles said. “Real cowboys live by the code that enables them to be kind, loyal, honest, hard-working and most of all, independent. The Cowboy Code is a way of looking at life and dealing with others honorably.”
