  • Students present tech project

    Highlands University

    New Mexico Highlands University media arts students presented a tech showcase in late September featuring the cutting-edge multimedia technology projects they created for museums and cultural institutions across New Mexico.

    The students are participating in the university’s one-of-a kind AmeriCorps Cultural Technology Program, or ACT, now in its third year. ACT is part of an ongoing partnership between the Highlands University Media Arts Department and the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.

  • Sapello resident, mother of four, receives scholarship

    Sheila Montoya of Sapello juggles a family including her husband and four children, classes at Luna Community College and clinicals in Las Vegas and Santa Fe to pursue her dream of becoming a registered nurse.

    Her life is “crazy,” she says, but “good crazy.” During a weekend of planning for her daughter and son’s birthday party, homework from Luna and readying for Sunday Mass at Immaculate Conception Parish, she took time to reflect on the path she has chosen to achieve a lifelong dream.

    Couture to get salary, $454,000
    ALBUQUERQUE — Departing New Mexico State University President Barbara Couture will be paid nearly $454,000 when she leaves her post in January.
    That’s on top of the salary she’ll earn while on paid administrative from now until she officially leaves at the end of the year. At an annual salary of $392,700, she’ll earn about $100,000 for the next three months leave.

  • Students present cutting-edge design work at symposium

    Highlands University

    Media arts students from New Mexico Highlands University presented their cutting-edge electronic design work at the International Symposium on Electronic Art earlier this month in Albuquerque.

    More than 100 artists and 400 presenters from 30 countries participated in the symposium that brings together art, science and technology. The symposium is in its 18th year.

    NMSU president on leave
    LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico Board of Regents is declining to say why the president of one of the state’s major universities is on leave.
    A New Mexico State University spokeswoman confirmed to the Las Cruces Sun-News that president Barbara Couture is on leave. But Minerva Baumann did not specify if the leave was paid or unpaid or for administrative, personal or medical reasons.

  • Dalan Abreu receives Michael Marr scholarship

    Dalan Abreu, a 2012 Las Vegas Robertson High School graduate, has been selected as the recipient of the 31st Annual Michael William Marr Memorial Scholarship. The Marr Scholarship has been awarded annually since the 1981-82 school year to a Robertson student athlete who excelled academically and participated in the football program.

    An outstanding scholar athlete and a leader on and off the field, Abreu participated in four sports and received many awards, including All- District and All-State honors in football and basketball. He served as football team captain.
