  • Luna offers acting classes

    “Every man and woman is star,”—Aleister Crowley

     

    An intense eight week acting course is being offered this fall, from Oct. 13 through Dec. 4. The course will provide basic training in the skills necessary to act in theatre and in film. The course will be performance based and will include training in voice, movement, characterization, and script analysis.

  • The Gorras Blancas ride at Gallinas

    It was on the second night when they came. Three riders, with white sacks over their heads to protect their identity, rode down the steep trail from the high country. The meeting was secret and held in the mountains adjacent to the village of Gallinas at the base of the ridges along the Rio Gallinas.

    It was 1890 and Las Gorras Blancas, the White Caps, were there to convince others of the need to resist the break up of the Commons, land that had been guaranteed under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago in 1848. Membership in the highly secretive movement grew to 1,500.

  • Homeland Security praises Highlands

    A representative from the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management praised New Mexico Highlands University for its recent improvements in campus security.

    “You have a terrific school, and your folks are doing a great job,” Rudy Holmes, an emergency preparedness coordinator for the department, wrote to Highlands officials.

    Holmes toured Highlands University Oct. 28 and reviewed the university’s emergency plans. In his initial report, Holmes commended the university for:

  • Local youth to be honored

     ALBUQUERQUE—Estevan B. Flores II, of Las Vegas, has been nominated for the Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award for his community service work. Estevan, age 19, got a taste for politics when he was elected New Mexico Boys State Governor in 2007.

    He also served as class president for his senior year of high school and worked with the City of Las Vegas Youth Commission, as well as done community service work for the San Miguel County Detention Center and keep America Beautiful. His goal — to become president of the United States.

  • Women's club gives $3,000 for scholarships

    The Las Vegas Women’s Club presented a check for $3,000 to the New Mexico Highlands University Foundation for scholarships to benefit three Highlands students.

    This year, the club awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Caroline Leigh Montoya, already a Highlands student, and $750 scholarships each to incoming freshman Felicia Lopez and Faith Romero, both 2008 graduates of West Las Vegas High School.

  • From Pecos to Australia

    Eight Students representing Pecos Middle School and Pecos High School will travel to Australia from Nov. 11 to 25, 2008, to participate in RACV Energy Breakthrough Competition.

    The Pecos Independent School District has been selected by the Center for Relational Learning to participate in the RACV Energy Breakthrough program in Maryborough Victoria, Australia.

  • Chief Gold to speak at Luna

    Las Vegas Police Chief Gary Gold will be the featured speaker at Luna Community College’s “A Conversation with the Community” at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the LRC Auditorium. Gold, District Attorney Richard Flores and Sgt. Carlos Mendoza of the New Mexico State Police will talk on the topic of “Drugs and Gangs.”

    They are part of several lecturers who have or will speak at Luna Community College in September, October and November.

    All lectures are free and open to the community.

  • Seeking past scholars

    The Viles Scholarship Foundation Inc., who awards scholarships to graduating seniors from Las Vegas Robertson, West Las Vegas, Wagon Mound, Pecos and Mora High Schools, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary (1958-2008) on Oct. 24, during New Mexico Highlands University’s Homecoming.

  • Highlands float wins in SF Parade

    A group of Highlands University students from the rodeo team, student ambassador program, and student senate won first place in the cowboy float category at the Santa Fe Fiestas Parade Sept. 7.

    The recruitment office at Highlands coordinated the Cowboy float in both the Santa Fe Fiestas Parade and the State Fair Parade Sept. 6 in Albuquerque.
