  • HU students receive praise

    Highlands University

    New Mexico Highlands University media arts students received praise during a portfolio review with the New Mexico chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts April 9 in Santa Fe.

    Fourteen New Mexico AIGA members reviewed the Highlands students’ work, including Fred Cisneros, principal for Cisneros Design, a full-service graphic design and branding firm in Santa Fe.

  • Film Blitz set to strike LV

    Another film is going to be shot in Las Vegas. This one is a little different. The Las Vegas Film Blitz 2011 is coming to Las Vegas this month thanks to a partnership between Luna Community College, the International Alliance for Stage Theatrical Employees, Albuquerque Actors’ Studio, Eastern New Mexico University — Roswell, and New Mexico State University — Grants.

    The Film Blitz is planned as a three-day production from May.

  • Gallegos earns scholarship

    The Comcast Foundation, founded in 1999 to provide charitable support to its local communities, today announced the 2011 recipients of its annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program, including West Las Vegas High School student Zachary Gallegos.

    On Wednesday, April 20, Gallegos and the other 24 scholarship winners from New Mexico were to be honored during the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce’s Education Excellence Annual Dinner at Embassy Suites Hotel featuring keynote speaker New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez.

  • Coca receives award

    Highlands University

    New Mexico Highlands University student Whitley Coca received a Distinction in Academic Writing Award for her essay, which was published in the university’s textbook, Cracking the Codes: A Guide to English Composition.

    Coca, a junior from Cimarron, wrote her Hurricane Katrina essay while taking freshman composition in 2009. A team of English faculty reviewed student essays and selected Coca’s for inclusion in the department’s latest English composition textbook that was published in 2010.

  • HU awarded grant to study climate change at refuge

    Highlands University

    New Mexico Highlands University was awarded a $50,000 grant to research paleoclimate changes of the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge, the first study of its kind in northeast New Mexico.

    The grant was awarded from the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, EPSCoR, which focuses on global climate change.
    Paleoclimatology is the scientific study of climate change through geologic analysis of past ages.

  • Highlands develops technology for NASA

    New Mexico Highlands University developed new hydrazine abatement technology that could dramatically change the way NASA cleanses decommissioned spacecraft like the space shuttle Discovery, which flew its last mission in March.

    NASA is conducting the final tests required by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to permit the space agency to safely dispose of treated hydrazine down the drain when using Highlands’ technology.
