  • Students receive scholarships

    Highlands University

    Two New Mexico Highlands University archaeology graduate students received scholarships from the Archaeological Society of New Mexico that will help fund their groundbreaking thesis research.

    Jason Nevins and Aaron Roth are the first to conduct in-depth forensic anthropological studies of human remains from the Sangre de Cristo mountains of northeast New Mexico. The remains date from A.D. 800 times to the late 1800s.

    Both will use the latest forensic technology in their research.

  • NMHU students present research at conference

    Highlands University

    Two New Mexico Highlands University student researchers presented at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in Washington, D.C., with one taking home first prize in the ecology division.

    Antonio Garcia, a junior majoring in forestry with a minor in biology, won first place for his geographic information systems, or GIS, study about the correlation between soil type and vegetation at the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Gurley wins scholarships

    New Mexico Highlands University computer science graduate student Jessica Gurley participated in computer science conferences in Boston and San Francisco in April.

    Gurley, a 31-year-old Las Vegas native, was awarded full scholarships to attend the Computer Research Association – Women Grad Cohort 2011 in Boston, and the annual Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference in San Francisco.

  • LCC tops SkillsUSA

    Luna Community College

    Luna Community College students Crystal Rae Martinez and Earl Varela brought home gold medals from the state SkillsUSA competition held in Albuquerque last month.

    Martinez, a senior cosmetology student from Las Vegas, wowed the judges depicting the cast of the heavy rock group KISS on the nails of her model Victoria Perea. Martinez competed in nail care.

  • West student third in contest

    Three New Mexico high school students will go to college with a little extra money in their pockets and some legal writing experience for their resumes as winners in the James T. Sperling High School Essay Contest, offered by the State Bar of New Mexico and sponsored by the Modrall Sperling Roehl Harris and Sisk law firm since 1997.

    This year’s topic was Symbolism and Freedom of Religion, which asked students to address personal freedoms in the school environment. A record 224 entries were received.

  • HU prof’s sculpture at festival

    New Mexico Highlands University fine arts professor David Lobdell’s fire sculpture was featured on April 30 at the Beltane Fire Festival on Calton Hill in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland.

    The Beltane Fire Society established its modern Beltane Fire Festival in 1988. The society selected Lobdell’s fire sculpture proposal for inclusion in the festival that attracts 12,000 people each year.

  • Elks student of the month

    Submitted to the Optic

    Briana Montaño has been named Elks Student of the Month, as announced by Elks Lodge No. 408.
    She is the daughter of Stacy and Debbie Montaño.

    A senior at West Las Vegas High School, Briana holds a 4.25 GPA and winning Elks Student of the Month as well as Rotary Club student of the month and Miss West Las Vegas.
