    The Smithsonian Latino Center is accepting applications for the 2012 Young Ambassadors Program being held June 24 – Aug. 3. The deadline for all applications is 5 p.m. on  April 9. For information on the application process, visit www.latino.si.edu/education.

  • AAUW scholarships available

    The Las Vegas branch of the American Association of University Women is offering scholarship opportunities to New Mexico Highlands University main campus female students.

    The application deadline is April 16. One or more eligible students will be awarded $1,000 scholarships.

    Applicants must have demonstrated that they are capable of and committed to earning an undergraduate or graduate degree from Highlands. They must also live in Las Vegas or surrounding communities.

    MANA del Norte is accepting scholarship applications for the 2012 – 2013 academic year. Applicants must be a resident of one of the following northern New Mexico counties:  Rio Arriba, Taos, Los Alamos, Mora, Santa Fe, or San Miguel. This year, 5 – $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to selected recipients. “Since inception in 1989, MANA del Norte has awarded more than $125,000 to residents of Northern New Mexico,” said Dolores E. Roybal, president of MANA del Norte.

  • Printmaking exhibit opens Feb. 17

    New Mexico Highlands University presents “Print, Printed, Printing (2),” a printmaking exhibit and free conference featuring nationally known artists, Feb. 17 – 18.

    The reception for the printmaking art exhibit is from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 17 in the Burris Hall Gallery, 903 National Ave. The exhibit continues through March 7.

    All events for the conference are free and open to the public. The complete conference schedule is available at Burris Hall.

  • NMHU professor presents at composer’s workshop

    New Mexico Highlands University music professor Tatiana Grecic Dutoit presented a composer’s workshop at the 10th Annual Hawaii University International Conference on Arts and Humanities earlier this month.

    Academics and professionals from more than 30 countries gathered for the arts and humanities conference.

  • RHS teams excel in MESA competition

    Middle and high school students from the area participated at last week’s New Mexico MESA’s Regional Design Competition held at New Mexico Highlands University. The students that placed will now prepare for state competition at MESA Day on April 21 in Albuquerque.

    WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama was expected to free 10 states from the strict and sweeping requirements of the No Child Left Behind law, giving leeway to states that promise to improve how they prepare and evaluate students, The Associated Press has learned.
