    Board president charged in case

    TRENTON, N.J. — The president of Elizabeth’s Board of Education and two others were charged Monday with falsifying information so their children could get free lunches.

    The state Attorney General’s Office said Marie Munn and two others with connections to the district signed their children up for a subsidized lunch program even though they did not meet income guidelines.

    Authorities said the theft cost taxpayers $7,000 over five years.

  • Martinez awarded Marr scholarship

    Submitted to the Optic

    Daniel Martinez, a 2011 Robertson High School graduate and one of the top student athletes in the state, has been selected recipient of the 30th Annual Michael William Marr Memorial Scholarship.

    The Marr Scholarship has been awarded annually since the 1981-82 school year to a Robertson High School student athlete who has excelled academically and participated in the football program.

  • Arguello passes on welding knowledge to LCC students

    At this point of his career Arturo Arguello wants to pass on his skills and knowledge to his students. It’s as simple as that.

    After working nearly 30 years as certified pipeline welder in Dalhart, Texas, the native of Yates, N.M., a little village outside of Roy, decided to come back home and pass on his knowledge to beginners.

    Arguello is currently teaching two general welding classes in LCC’s Springer Satellite.

  • LCC program huge success

    Luna Community College’s Future Leaders Summer Program had a 100 percent  retention rate. The program allowed qualifying high school students and 2011 graduating seniors to earn college credit in science, math, engineering and technology, while instilling leadership and college success skills.

    All the students costs were defrayed by the program.

  • West graduates launch solo music careers

    For years, singing siblings Fabian Montaño and Anita Lopez — both West Las Vegas grads — have enchanted listeners as members of Mariachi Paisano del Valle. Now both of them have launched solo careers, with a joint CD release dance set for 9 p.m. today, Sept. 9 at the Night Owl.

  • Highlands building wins gold

    New Mexico Highlands University’s remodeled Felix Martinez building was certified as LEED Gold, a high-level measure of green building practices in areas like water conservation, energy efficiency, recycling construction debris, and using recycled materials for construction.

    LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The U.S. Green Building Council awards LEED certification to a building that qualifies based on data collected from a year of usage after it opens.
