  • Robertson FFA going strong in various competitions

    The Robertson FFA chapter has continued to earn  awards throughout 2011. At the New Mexico State FFA Convention held in June, 16 members excelled as they performed their leadership skills in various competitions.

    The Ag-Issues team placed fourth with the issue concerning the water shortage in Las Vegas. This team consisted of John Solano, Reyes Martinez, Megan Pino, Branden Goetsch, and Kartik Kumar.

  • NMHU graduate to attend White House holiday event

    Highlands University

    New Mexico Highlands University graduate and former student body president Jesse Lopez was invited to a White House holiday reception Dec. 14 to honor a select group of community leaders from across the country.

    President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will host the reception.

    Lopez, 30, is an activist in the gay community. From 2009 to 2011, he served as president for the nonprofit Albuquerque Pride, the largest Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender organization in New Mexico.

  • HU’s Sigma Xi chapter wins award for research program

    Highlands University

    The New Mexico Highlands’ Sigma Xi chapter earned a program award for its Student Research Fund, making it one of only seven chapters worldwide to receive this honor in 2011.

    Sigma Xi is an honorary scientific research society with 522 chapters in more than 100 countries.

    The Highlands chapter has a long track record of being named for program awards and other honors, such as the 2007 – 2008 Certificate of Excellence awarded for exceptional chapter activity.

  • Preschooler knows the climbing ropes

    LAS CRUCES — When Adlore “Addy” Lou Hamling was still in her mother’s belly, she made 15 treks up mountains and rock faces. Now that she’s 4 years old, she has climbed more times than she can remember — at least 12 times this year alone.

    “When I learned how, it’s the best thing in the universe — at least to me,” said the 4-year-old.

  • Advisers present workshop

    Six outstanding New Mexico Highlands University peer advisers presented a workshop at the New Mexico Association of Student Affairs Professional Symposium earlier this month in Albuquerque.

    The peer advisers competed with public college students from throughout New Mexico for the honor to present their workshop titled, “What’s Your Story?” It’s one they present to fellow students on the Highlands University campus.

  • Searching for Billy Goat Roberts

    He was a colonel in the Spanish American War in the Philippines. He was a superb marksman with a slingshot. He was successful in obtaining a mail order bride from Chicago. He loved adventure and was last seen heading down the Rio Grande River on a raft on his way to the East Coast of the United States.  

    These are only a few of the stories that students at Rio Gallinas School for Ecology and the Arts have been researching of a man known affectionately as Billy Goat Roberts.
