  • Acclaimed filmmaker to lecture at Highlands

    Highlands University

    Documentary filmmaker, editor and director Maureen Gosling will teach at Highlands University April 1 to April 12 through the university’s Nina Telsa Ballen Visiting Artist Program.

    Gosling will also present a lecture and lead a discussion today (Monday) after a free community screening of the documentary Smokin’ Fish. The screening will be at 7 p.m. in Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

    West Las Vegas Middle School has a chapter of Business Professionals of America with a respected tradition of success. Though nationally recognized, the chapter began the year with new leadership and very few experienced members.

    Nevertheless, the group learned how to conduct successful fundraisers, as it set forth upon its mission to compete at the state B.P.A. conference in events such as video production, website design, graphic design, spreadsheets and both prepared and extemporaneous speech earlier this month.

  • Library awarded humanities grant

    Highlands University

    New Mexico Highlands’ Donnelly Library was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant that includes the Muslim Journeys collection of materials.

    Highlands was the only university in the state to receive the collection of 25 books, four films, and other   resources that introduce the public to the complex history and culture of Muslims in the United States and globally.

    The NEH developed Muslims Journeys in collaboration with the American Library Association.

    Panel OKs book memorial

    SANTA FE — The House Education Committee has approved a measure aimed at encouraging diversity when it comes to book choices for New Mexico schools.
    The nonbinding memorial got the OK on Wednesday. Earlier this week, it was the focus of a debate between sponsor Democrat Rep. Antonio “Moe” Maestas of Albuquerque and Republican Rep. Nora Espinoza of Roswell.
