  • LCC students honored at Legislature

    Luna Community College

    Luna Community College’s Shannon Krause and Gary Gamertsfelder were among a couple dozen New Mexico students honored at the Capitol on Wednesday as part of the New Mexico All-State Academic Team.

    Krause is a criminal justice major from Los Alamos, while Gamertsfelder is a vocational technical major from Albuquerque.

    As part of their award, both will receive free tuition to a four-year university in the state. Both Krause and Gamertsfelder have been nominated to the All-USA Team.

  • Luna Community College Honor Roll

    Submitted to the Optic

    Luna Community College announced its Fall 2011 Vice President’s Honor Roll.  Inclusion on the Vice President’s Honor Roll requires students to successfully complete, without incomplete grades included, a minimum of 12 graded credit hours with at least a 3.66 GPA or higher.  Graded credit hours do not include S/U graded courses, audits or credit by exam.

  • Challenge to schools: Embracing digital textbooks

    WASHINGTON — Are hardbound textbooks going the way of slide rules and typewriters in schools?

    Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski on Wednesday challenged schools and companies to get digital textbooks in students’ hands within five years. The Obama administration’s push comes two weeks after Apple Inc. announced it would start to sell electronic versions of a few standard high-school books for use on its iPad tablet.

  • H.U. prof’s composition to be featured in orchestra

    New Mexico Highlands University music professor Edward Harrington’s composition “Four Threads on William Blake” will be featured in the Santa Fe Community Orchestra’s program “New Works by New Mexico’s Composers” starting at 6 p.m. today, Jan. 20.

    The free public presentation will be in Stieren Hall at the Santa Fe Opera campus, 301 Opera Drive.

    Romero heads to Spain for semester

    Samantha Josephine Romero, a 2006 Robertson High School graduate, will study in Spain for the winter 2012 semester. 
    Romero, who received her bachelor of arts degree with honors from the University of New Mexico last December, will be taking intensive language courses at the Universidad de Granada Centro de Lenguas Modernas in Granada, Spain.

  • Agency wants more time for audit

    ALBUQUERQUE— The New Mexico Higher Education Department is asking for more time to complete a 2010 audit report that's already more than a year late.
    The Albuquerque Journal reports that the agency's delay in completing its report into how it managed about $100 million in public money in 2010 has caused the department to miss a deadline for its 2011 report.
    The agency said it needs until at least the end of this month for its past-due report and until March for the 2011 data.
