    O’Brien is part of a small group of individuals from New Mexico with this type of certification.

  • Students to design fashion for symposium

    Highlands University

    Las Vegas and Taos high school students will have a chance to design high-tech accessories for an electronically enhanced fashion show called CorpusElectric that will be performed at the International Symposium on Electronic Art in Albuquerque in September.

    The CorpusElectric Collective is a collaboration forged this spring between the New Mexico Highlands University Media Arts Department, Taos Runway Vigilantes, an avant-garde fashion team, and 516 ARTS, an independent nonprofit arts venue based in Albuquerque.

  • LV native excelling as software engineer

    New Mexico Highlands University computer science graduate Amy Chavez Blea’s successful career as a software engineer for IBM got a kick start in 1999 when a university Career Services adviser encouraged her to apply for an internship with the corporation.

    Blea, a Las Vegas native who graduated from Highlands in 2000, was on campus this week to give talks to several computer science classes.

  • Internship changes LCC student’s view on education

    About a year ago, Luna Community College student Joseph Dominguez was at one of those points in his life were he wasn’t sure about his educational future.

    After one semester as an intern with the U.S. Census Bureau in Seattle, Dominguez is more focused than ever. Dominguez, a 2009 Robertson High graduate, served as a supervisory survey statistician during the fall semester in Seattle. It was the first time he was away from home.

    Police: Students had weapons
    BELEN — Belen police say four students are facing long-term suspensions and possible expulsion after they were caught with weapons on school grounds.

    School Superintendent Ron Marquez tells the Albuquerque Journal that any type of situation involving weapons and student safety is taken very seriously.

    Belen Police Chief Dan Robb says two unidentified Belen High School students were seen shooting each other with an airsoft pellet gun after school on Feb. 29.

  • San Miguel County youth named 4-H state ambassador

    Robertson High School sophomore Sierra Zamora was inducted as a 4-H state ambassador during the annual 4-H senior leadership retreat in Albuquerque in January.

    Zamora, 16, joins Hugh Veit of Valencia County, Serina Pack of Grant County and Lily Woodall of Doña Ana County as the 2012 state ambassadors.
