Some 40 people were there last September, teachers, students, parents, and the school principal. The Los Niños PTA meeting was managed well, but most notable was the active interchange between parents and the principal, David Baca.

Parents made known their expectations and concerns, and the administration did the same. Both “educated” each other, and left the meeting with an understanding of common goals and actions to be taken.

Applications being accepted

The Viles Scholarship Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for the 2012-2013 academic school year. The Viles Foundation awarded more than $85,000 in scholarship assistance for the 2011-2012 academic year.

New Mexico Highlands University computer science graduate Amy Chavez Blea’s successful career as a software engineer for IBM got a kick start in 1999 when a university Career Services adviser encouraged her to apply for an internship with the corporation.

Blea, a Las Vegas native who graduated from Highlands in 2000, was on campus this week to give talks to several computer science classes.

Police: Students had weapons
BELEN — Belen police say four students are facing long-term suspensions and possible expulsion after they were caught with weapons on school grounds.

School Superintendent Ron Marquez tells the Albuquerque Journal that any type of situation involving weapons and student safety is taken very seriously.

Belen Police Chief Dan Robb says two unidentified Belen High School students were seen shooting each other with an airsoft pellet gun after school on Feb. 29.
