In her own words, Luna Community College Dental Assisting student Monica Garcia said she was “shocked and nervous” when she heard her name called after winning the gold medal at Saturday’s New Mexico SkillsUSA closing ceremony at the Crown Plaza.

“I love the dental assisting program,” said Garcia minutes after receiving her gold medal. “I had been out of school for five years and the experience has been great. I was well prepared. I’m looking forward to competing at the national level.”

    Submitted to the Optic

West Las Vegas Middle School has a chapter of Business Professionals of America with a respected tradition of success. Though nationally recognized, the chapter began the year with new leadership and very few experienced members.

Nevertheless, the group learned how to conduct successful fundraisers, as it set forth upon its mission to compete at the state B.P.A. conference in events such as video production, website design, graphic design, spreadsheets and both prepared and extemporaneous speech earlier this month.
