    The Highlands University Computer and Mathematical Sciences Department received a Multifunction Utility Logistics Equipment (MULE) robot from Sandia National Laboratories. The robot was delivered April 13.

    Suarez hosts town hall
    ALBUQUERQUE — PBS NewsHour senior correspondent Ray Suarez visited Albuquerque for a teacher town hall on New Mexico’s high dropout rates just as the state’s largest teachers’ union vows to fight a new teacher evaluation proposal.

    Suarez hosted the town hall at the University of New Mexico on  Wednesday for an event sponsored by New Mexico PBS.

  • Ga. handcuff case renews debate

    ALBUQUERQUE — A New Mexico teacher asked a 13-year-old girl to stop talking with her friend and move to another seat. The girl refused. The teacher called the police.

    The case is among thousands across the country fueling a long-simmering debate over when educators should bring in the police to deal with disruptive students. A 6-year-old Georgia kindergartner became the latest test case last week when she was hauled off in steel handcuffs after throwing books and toys in a school tantrum.

  • LCC students come out on top

    Moments after winning his second consecutive first-place finish in the SkillsUSA New Mexico Collision Repair Technology category, Luna Community College student Earl Varela was concentrating on one thing — nationals.

    Varela, along with LCC Dental Assistant Student Amanda Gonzales, will head to the National SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City in June.

  • Treatment conference in May

    The New Mexico Highlands University School of Social Work Community Clinical Treatment Program will present a Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Conference in Albuquerque May 16 – 18, highlighting the latest treatment methods.

    The conference, which will be an annual event, will be at the Sandia Resort and Casino.

    UNM museum returns artifacts
    ALBUQUERQUE — The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico has returned to Mexican officials artifacts believed to be of Pre-Columbian origin.

    The Consulate of Mexico announced the return of the artifacts late Tuesday.

    The items include beads made of shell that are estimated to be around 700 years old.

    No-contest plea for ex-teacher

    LOS LUNAS — A former Belen teacher has pleaded no contest to two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after authorities say he tried to lure a 15-year-old girl into having alcoholic drinks with him.

    The Albuquerque Journal reports 42-year-old Manuel G. Martinez III pleaded to the charges Tuesday.

    Los Lunas police arrested Martinez last March after police used a teenage girl’s phone to send text messages to Martinez.
