  • DeVries RMAC Coach of the Year

    The program’s head coach since its inception, New Mexico Highlands University’s women’s track and field mentor Bob DeVries was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the just-concluded indoor track season.

    True to form, DeVries shared the credit with those around him.

    FARMERSBURG, Ind. — An Indiana school district reeling from the uproar over a teacher’s comments that she believes gays have no purpose in life suspended the woman Wednesday.

  • $45K awarded to Jauregui

    New Mexico Highlands University forestry major Juan Jauregui received a $45,000 scholarship funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

    This is the first scholarship awarded at Highlands as part of a $300,000 USDA grant the university garnered in 2012 to establish a cutting-edge geospatial technology lab for advanced map making. The lab opened in January.

  • School district sued over yoga

    SAN DIEGO — An attorney representing a family bent out of shape over a public school yoga program in the beach city of Encinitas filed a lawsuit Wednesday to stop the district-wide classes.

    In the lawsuit filed in San Diego Superior Court, attorney Dean Broyles argued that the twice weekly, 30-minute classes are inherently religious, in violation of the separation between church and state.

  • FFA takes top spot in tournament

    Two of the Las Vegas FFA Parliamentary Procedure teams recently traveled to Phoenix to compete at the Josh Morgan Memorial Parliamentary Procedure Tournament.

    The Las Vegas FFA senior team placed first at the tournament. The team consisted of Luke Romero, Clay Prieskorn, Manny Villanueva, Ramos Aragon, Tabitha Sanchez and Sharissa Higgins.

  • LCC students make vice president’s honor roll

    Luna Community College announced its Fall 2012 Vice President’s Honor Roll.  Inclusion on the Vice President’s Honor Roll requires students to successfully complete, without incomplete grades included, a minimum of 12 graded credit hours with at least a 3.660 GPA. Graded credit hours do not include S/U graded courses, audits or credit by exam.

    DANBURY, Conn. — As a little girl, Lauren Rousseau would create make-believe classrooms with dolls and a small blackboard. And when a gunman invaded Sandy Hook Elementary School, the substitute with a life-long dream of being a teacher died doing her best to keep the children calm. She read to them, her father said.
