  • Textbook purchases in question

    SANTA FE — The New Mexico Supreme Court heard arguments over the state’s practice of buying textbooks for private and religious schools, which critics said has robbed public schools of nearly $2 million a year.

    Those who sued the state Public Education Department and its Cabinet secretary, Hanna Skandera, argued Wednesday that the use of public funds to buy textbooks for private schools violates the state constitution, reported The Santa Fe New Mexican.

  • Youths attend leadership skills training in Colorado

    High School students from Northern New Mexico developed leadership skills at a National Hispanic Institute training program in Colorado, thanks to Highlands University.

    The 10 high-achieving students participated in the eight-day NHI Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session at Colorado State University- Fort Collins.

The two Luna Community College electronic students are proving that scientist Nikola Tesla’s technology actually works, said Luna Community College Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) instructor Sequoia Romero.

  • Camp provides hands-on experience to students

    Eighth grade girls from around New Mexico gained hands-on science knowledge from Highlands University women faculty at an AAUW Tech Trek Camp aimed at building confidence and stimulating interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.

    The American Association of University Women New Mexico sponsored the camp last week in collaboration with Highlands University.

    Forestry professor Sara Brown taught two workshops during Tech Trek titled, Wildfire Science: It’s Hot!

  • Luna Community College orientation set for Aug. 20

    Luna Community College will be having a New Student Orientation for all first-time students beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20 at the Rough Rider Grill.

    The Luna Community College New Student Orientation is designed to help students make the transition into college as smooth as possible.  Students will receive information that will not only assist in preparing them for their first day of class but also equip them with the tools necessary to complete their journey.

  • Competing nationally - LCC’s Serna earns sixth place at national SkillsUSA competition

    Luna Community College cosmetology student Melissa Serna just missed finishing in the top five at the SkillsUSA National competition in Louisville recently. Fellow student Iisha Trujillo took 13th in her category.

    The two students had taken first place in their respective categories at the state SkillsUSA competition in April. Serna competed in nail care while Trujillo competed in cosmetology. Katrina Gonzales, a recent Luna Community College cosmetology graduate, was Serna’s nail care model.
