  • New refuge step closer to reality

    After months of studying the idea, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to move forward with plans to establish a new wildlife refuge in Mora County.

    And it wants to use that new refuge to anchor a much larger conservation area in the Rio Mora watershed in Mora, San Miguel and Colfax counties.

    Easter egg hunts planned for this weekend

    At least two Easter egg hunts are planned for this weekend. The first will start at 1 p.m. Saturday at the West Las Vegas football field. For more information call 505-617-5078.

    The second one, sponsored by the Las Vegas Elks Lodge, begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Robertson football field. Prizes will be given out, and all ages are invited to attend. For more information, call 425-6181.

    Highlands University through its political science department is sponsoring question-and-answer sessions for the mayoral and council candidates running in the April 17 runoffs. The Ward 3 session will be at 5:30 p.m. this coming Tuesday. The mayoral session will be this coming Thursday. Both begin at 5:30 p.m. at Highlands’ Sininger Hall, room 100.

  • High court to decide candidacy

    SANTA FE — The state Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to resolve a dispute over whether candidates, including Sen. Pete Campos, should remain on this year’s ballot despite missing information in their election paperwork.

    The court will hear arguments next Tuesday in several election challenges that seek to remove incumbent legislators and other candidates from the primary and general election ballots.

  • Murderer arrested in NM

    ALAMOGORDO — Alamogordo police say a convicted ax murderer has been arrested after he allegedly violated an order of protection by knocking on the door of the family home Feb. 21 where the murders occurred in 1989.

    The Alamogordo Daily News reports Albert Lueras was booked into the Otero County Detention Center on fourth-degree felony aggravated stalking and a misdemeanor violation of a restraining order. He was arraigned Monday on both charges in 12th Judicial District Court.
