  • Yes, I wrote this column nine years ago. And now the dear little wrens are back and the housekeeping chores are back in full swing. I realized I couldn’t paint a better word picture (palabra pintorescas) than this so perhaps it is worthy of a rerun. And yes, I discussed it with the little birds and they agreed with me. They were too busy nest building to be interrupted by some character carrying a notepad and a pencil.

  • Tuesday, May 24, 1966 — Mike Craig and Ray Gallegos of Robertson High School were awarded full athletic scholarships to New Mexico Western University. Craig was center for the Cardinals, while Gallegos played fullback. Both were leading players for the Cardinals last year on offense and defense.

    Twenty-five years ago, more than 600,000 service members took part in Operation Desert Storm, at the time the largest deployment of U.S. Armed Forces since Vietnam. Kenneth “Kenny”Luján, then a Specialist E-4 from Ojitos Frios was one who served.

    On Monday, Luján will march among more than 500 Gulf War veterans in the American Veterans Center’s National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

  • Monday, May 23, 1966 — The Grand Meadows, periodically the victim of a severe drought, is in the midst of a serious dry spell. According to figures of the Federal Aviation Agency at the airport, there has been but .62 of an inch of precipitation since Jan. 1. This is compared with 1.36 inches for the first four months of 1964, 1.29 inches in 1963.
