  • Surprises come in all sizes here at my house. You, my readers, have really made my day, my week… I am so surprised so many of you do still have your cedar chest, and you have a story about it as well. Your in person visits, phone calls and notes prove this one column hit home with many of us. Thank you for telling me about yours too.

A call from Santa Fe from our friend Fernando leads the list of cedar chest owners. His family still has five chests, all in use. And in 1951 he made two that are still in use with his family and will go to his granddaughters.

Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance is offering a fly-fishing workshop for beginners or experienced anglers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at Gallinas Canyon. The workshop was originally scheduled for mid-May but due to water conditions was rescheduled for Saturday.

Fly-fishing, like hunting, helps keep us connected with reading the land and water ways. Discussion will focus on whether the river is healthy enough to support trout and how to enhance the river’s ability to sustain a healthy trout population.
