  • The Mora VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary had a busy weekend.

    On Saturday, the Mora VFW was host to the Dist. 5  meeting at the VFW Center in Mora.

    The ladies assisted them by decorating the tables with flags and flowers and serving lunch prepared by Commander Melvin Vigil’s family.

    More than 30 people attended. They came from Raton, Clayton and Mora. Cerro and Las Vegas were not represented. After the meal,  the comrades held their meeting, which included reports and plans for the future.

  • Yes, winter has arrived in our mountains. The days are short, The temperature rarely gets to 40 degrees in the warmest part of the day, and it is cold to colder at night, often below zero. The folks who predicted a warm winter missed their mark I’d say. Global warming hasn’t hit here yet.

    I gave up on making New Year resolutions a long time ago.

    • Story Time at Carnegie Library, 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, in the children’s area of the public library. This week’s book is “The Land of Lost Things (El Pais de las Cosas Perdidas)” by Dina Bursztyn. Free and open to the public.
    • The Motor Vehicle Department in Las Vegas will be opening at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

  • Mora native Anita Roybal recently held a celebration to honor her educational achievement. Roybal, the wife of Deacon Eloy C. Roybal, received her doctorate in education from the New Mexico State University. Recently, Roybal was honored at a celebration organized by her husband and their family.  

    All nine of her children and 12 grandchildren were there. They came from Los Angeles, Indiana, Colorado and all over the state to honor their mother and grandmother.
