  • The Mora Youth Hunter Education Challenge showed a great improvement at the state meet in Raton, N.M., earlier this month.

    Last year, they placed 12th when competing against other groups in the state. Now in the 2012 meet they raised their scores to place eight. The Youth Hunter Education Challenge is an international event that is held every June at the Whittington Center near Raton every June. The event is sponsored by National Rifle Association, 4H, New Mexico Game and Fish Department, and New Mexico Shooting Sports.

  • The dark storm clouds grow as I write this in mid-June. Will they bring rain, or … will they just bring lightning? 2012 has been a bad year for lightning fires in New Mexico.

    • The Las Vegas area Association of Educational Retirees June Meeting, 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 11, at the Plaza Hotel Conservatory. The meetings will include a discussion of delegate numbers for State Convention and Planning for the 2012 NMAER State Convention. Direct any questions to Tomás at 575-421-2455.

    • Samaritan House Thrift Store hours: Monday through Friday; the store will be open for sales and to receive donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturdays, personnel will receive donations from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Julian Barela of Rainsville was recently appointed as executive director of the Mora Valley Community Health Services by its board.

    Barela graduated from Mora High School in 1999.

    In 2003, he graduated from New Mexico Highlands University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration on finance.

    In 2004, he received his master’s degree in business administration at NMHU.

  • We just had a fun and educational visit with some interesting folk here at the ranch. I continue to be amazed at how old ranch history just pops up, and this time, the stories were really old.

    Peter Welles called me early in the year to find out what was going on at the ranch, and could he and his wife Anita come for a visit in May … of course I said yes! His family built the third log cabin here when my grandfather started our dude ranch business.
