  • The Mora varsity cheerleading squad performed well at the state spirit competition at the Santa Ana Star Center in Bernalillo on March 23 and 24.

    The cheerleaders were able to compete at the state competition because of their showing in other competitions during the season. At these competitions they took the first place spot twice and one third place.

  • Where oh where have the big snow of yester year gone? The ranch has recorded 81 inches here so far this year, which is much better than last year, but our annual average is 120 inches, so we have a way to go. We still  have time for a big storm or two, and the high mountains do have enough snow to keep our streams running longer than last year. The acequia watchers monitor this constantly.

    Spring is starting off great; for Las Vegas, the town is humming with people everywhere. But, best of all, the citizens of Las Vegas joined with groups from all over to help Keep Las Vegas Beautiful by picking up all the loose windblown litter.

    • Story Time at Carnegie Library, 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, in the children’s area of the public library. This week’s book is “My Side of the Car” by Kate Feiffer. The theme for the month is “Woman’s Month — Books Written for Children by Women.” All programs are free and open to the public.

    • The Las Vegas Police Department is requesting assistance from business owners to update the department’s emergency contacts. They are requesting all local businesses to fill out an afterhours contact form to better serve the community. Forms are available at the station and on the city’s website.

  • The Mora County Commission meeting last Tuesday was the scene of a special presentation of Medals of Valor and good citizenship, given by Lucas Duran and a representative from the Ledoux, Monte Aplanado, El Carmen Fire Department. Those receiving the awards were: Cindy Aragon, Angelica Aragon, Marcos Mondragon and Alonzo Aragon.
