    Highlands University

    Outstanding Las Vegas middle and high school band students will perform with the New Mexico Highlands University concert band at Band Fest 2011 at 2 p.m. on April 3 at Ilfeld Auditorium.

    The participating band directors call the concert an historic occasion that they hope will build a stronger sense of community between Las Vegas City Schools and West Las Vegas School District.

    • The Justin J. Roper Memorial Scholarship applications are available. The scholarship is open to West Las Vegas seniors. Applications are now available at the West Las Vegas High School counselor’s office. Application deadline is April 29.

  • WEDNESDAY MIERCOLES
    • Story Time, 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 30 in the children’s area of Carnegie Public Library. All programs are free and open to the public.

    • The Las Vegas Ministerial Fellowship is having Lenten services at noon on Wednesday, March 30 and April 6 and 13 at the St. Paul’s Peace Church. For more information, call 425-7283.

  • FRIDAY VIERNES
    • A low-cost, dog and cat shot clinic will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday to Sunday, March 25-27 at the West Las Vegas Middle School Gym. Rabies and Distemper shots are available for $10 per shot. Microchipping is available for $16. No appointment necessary. Also, drop off any donations of unopened cans and bags of dog and cat/puppy and kitten food for the Pet Food Pantry. Volunteers are also needed to help with this clinic.     New Mexico Highlands

    The 17th Annual New Mexico Highlands University Fiesta de la Hispanidad brings music and dance center stage at Ilfeld Auditorium March 26, 6:30 p.m., for this community celebration of Hispanic culture.

    The cost for the event is $4, and there will be free refreshments and door prizes. Ilfeld Auditorium is at 900 University Ave.

    Fiesta de la Hispanidad is sponsored by New Mexico Highlands University President Jim Fries, the university’s School of Social Work, and Community First Bank of Las Vegas.

  • Saturday the Mora Little League had its first registration day at Russell’s parking lot.

    It was a busy day for the Little League representatives. They were thankful for the beautiful day (excepting for the wind).

    There were many parents and young players enthusiastically looking forward to a new season.

    Young people from ages 4 through 16 came to signup for the 2011 Little league season. There were 35 players who signed up on Saturday.
