  • Oh, my! There must be some mistake. I just got a Christmas catalog in the mail. How dare any business try to buck the trend by sending these catalogs out before Thanksgiving?

    My mother (if she were here) would have a lot to say about this rush to sell toys and more. The big catalogs of yesteryear Montgomery Ward, Sears, Roebuck and Penneys came to our house right after Thanksgiving. Our home post office was at Valmora (the TB sanatorium where we lived) was in the back of our Valmora store. The store was small.

    New Mexico Highlands University media arts student Tara Trudell’s documentary narrative film Poem Home screened at the 38th annual American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco earlier this month.

    The festival is the oldest and most prominent media showcase of its kind in the world. Filmmakers whose work is selected to screen at the festival earn the coveted film laurels that Trudell may now display on all her future films.

    The New Mexico Highlands University Concert Choir presents Vivaldi’s Gloria at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. in Ilfeld Auditorium.

    Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy in 1678 and is a master composer of the baroque period. The soaring and joyful Gloria is Vivaldi’s 12-movement choral composition.

    The musical program also includes Vivaldi’s four-movement Credo, as well as The Bell Anthem by Henry Purcell, another baroque period composer.

    • Meadow City Camera Club has an exhibit of photographs in the El Fidel Restaurant until Friday, Dec. 6. Eight local photographers have taken “Points of Departure,” each seeing something unique. A reception will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at El Fidel Restaurant.

  • Sister Teresa of the Child Jesus, OCD, of the Monastery of Our Mother of Mercy, Alexandria, S.D., celebrated her Diamond Jubilee of entrance on Oct. 25.

    She had celebrated her renewal of vows at a Concelebrated Mass on May 31 with the Most Rev. John J. Swain, Bishop of Sioux Falls, S.D.. as principal celebrant.

    He gave a beautiful homily in which he quoted St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, thanking sister for her years of service to God and His church.
