Today's Features

  • The 20th annual Kiwanis Bike Safety Rodeo is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 at the Wilson Gym parking lot on the New Mexico Highlands University campus.  

    All children from ages five to 12 years are invited to participate.  The entry fee is $5 which includes a new bicycle helmet.    

    Participants with safe and legal helmets will be admitted for $1.

    • Story Time, 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 1 in the children’s area of Carnegie Public Library. All programs are free and open to the public.

    • Tri-County Farmers Market is open from 7 a.m. until sellout on Wednesdays at Sixth Street and University. Starting on June 1 the market will open on both Wednesdays and Saturdays. On June 11, there will be a kick-festival for the market.

    • The Las Vegas Optic office will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, May 31.

    • A survivors fund has been set up for the families of Gene Hern and Frank Romero. The following are the accounts: Children of Gene Hern, Wells Fargo account number 7040660958 and the widow of Frank Romero, Wells Fargo account number 7040660941.

    • The city of Las Vegas employee union has set up memorial funds for Gene Hern and Frank Romero at the State Employees Credit Union. The Hern account number is 3001582700 and the Romero account is 3001582710.

  • Joshua Garcia and six other northern New Mexico recipients were honored at a luncheon this month where they received the Pete Domenici Scholarship funded by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Garcia, son of John and Ann Garcia, is a 2011 graduate of Mora High School. At the luncheon recipients had a chance to sit and visit with Domenici.

    The students selected for the scholarship were chosen because of their outstanding academic achievement as well as outstanding leadership skills and community service.

  • A recent KFUN radio program that Jesus Lopez hosts had an old friend of mine as a guest. Willie Sanchez and I were students at New Mexico Highlands University together a long time ago.

    This was the early 1950s when our veterans from both World War II and the Korean conflict returned and went to school via the G.I. Bill. They came to get a good and useful education so they could move on with their lives. Some of us younger students didn’t have the same work and study habits they had. In other words, they came to get an education and they had little time to goof off.
