    • The New Mexico State Police will be conducting Sobriety Checkpoints in San Miguel County through the end of June.  The purpose of the Sobriety Checkpoints is to prevent alcohol and drug related crashes.  Sobriety Checkpoints also serve as a deterrent against alcohol and drug related crimes, according to state police.

    Three weeks until hopeful monsoon. Three weeks until the heavens unleash what fury remains after crying over the Mississippi and Minot floodplains.

    What did Las Vegas do to deserve Mother Nature’s stony dry stare? Look around city streets and you see the crisp gold memory of grass, see old men run hand along rheumy eyes in a desperate attempt to fend off flying dust. Once lush backyards have taken on a gritty slumber; a lone catalpa offers tiny token leaves instead of its once imposing canopy.

  • Three of Mora’s young athletes came home champions of the 3-on-3 tournaments called “Hoop It Up” that took place at the Civic Plaza in Albuquerque recently. The tourney was held on an outdoor court in the civic center with 100- degree temperature. The Mora Lakers won six consecutive games to claim the championship.

  • I never know what my friends will share with me next. They just hand me something, sometimes in a brown paper bag, and I soon discover I have yet another treasure in my possession.

    I was handed a big ziplock bag with some white, foamy semi-liquid in it right after Christmas. My friends know I like to cook and often bake various breads and desserts. I really wasn’t sure just what I had in this new baggie, but a recipe came with it for Amish friendship bread.

    • The Noon Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas will hold its annual Pancake Day fundraiser on Wednesday, June 22 at the Hillcrest Restaurant. Hours are 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.,11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and children. Proceeds benefits Las Vegas Youth projects. For more info call 718-6655.
