    Highlands University

    Ane Romero, a New Mexico Highlands University graduate and 2005 Miss New Mexico, recently was tapped for an Excellence in Federal Government Leadership Award for her work on suicide prevention and other mental health issues.

    The National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health made the award to Romero, a legislative aid for U.S. Rep. Grace Napolitano.

    • 2011 Fourth of July Fiestas festivities including live music and other entertainment continue until 6 p.m. at Plaza Park.

    • Camel Rock Casino has postponed its fireworks display and all outdoor events until fire danger subsides.

    • The Las Vegas Optic will be closed on Monday, July 4 in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. It will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, July 5.

  • The Mora School grounds are not vacant for the summer. Although school is out there is a lot going on.

    There is a basketball camp under way for the young people who are aspiring to be on the Rangers and Rangerettes team in the future.

    Another basketball camp just finished which included children from ages 6 to 13 under the  direction of James Branch, the new Mora Rangers basketball coach.

  • There is a change in our New Mexico landscape. I have said for a long time our state flower should really be the broken down car that decorates so many yards in this state. The high price of steel suddenly brings a welcome change as all sorts of old junk steel is now hauled off and sold.
