  • Smoke from the Tres Lagunas fire billows up in huge clouds as I write this. Yes, it is a long way across the mountain from the Pecos Canyon to Rociada, but fire knows no limits when such high winds blow night and day.

    • Ride to Pride’s Raising of the flag for Flag Day, 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14 at 47 Alameda Road. There will be refreshments, and it is open to the public. The Ride to Pride’s veteran program flag designed by Dereck Martinez of Rociada will raise along with the U.S. and New Mexico flag. Zoe Martinez, a fifth-grade student from Señora Valencia’s class at Don Cecilio Elementary took second in the flag design contest.

  • Simon R. Fresquez, of the United States Navy CMI/EXW/SW has been awarded the Marvin G. Shields Award for the calendar year 2012.

    This award is presented to recognize the one Sea- bee that has made extraordinary contributions to the naval construction force and has upheld the highest traditions and legacy of U.S. Navy Seabees over the course of the past year.   

  • Memorial Day is always memorable for me, here in our big mountains. Friends, neighbors, actually … and I try to “tour the ranch” as such on our ATVs. Tinta Negra, my old dog decided she would guard this house this time. She’s 12 now and thinks it is best to hold down the back step.

    We start off by going past our ranch cemetery, and we all silently wish those aren’t with us well. May they rest in peace, and this includes our many dear dogs and cats.

    • Community Meeting on the Future of the Montezuma Skating Pond, sponsored by the Skating Pond Task Force meeting from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 6 at the United World College in Montezuma. The task force wants your opinion on what the Skating Pond should be used for and what it should look like in the future. The results will be shared with the city government.     • Pecos Schools Summer Food Program will provide free meals starting on Monday, June 3 to Friday, June 21. Breakfast takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both at Pecos Elementary. Meals will be available to all children.
