  • If you drive Highway 518 towards Mora this time of year (as I do) you probably will meet trucks and trailers filled with our local, homegrown Christmas trees. They are sold in tree lots throughout New Mexico. Mora County is famous for its beautiful Christmas trees. Almost all of them are natural, not planted, and they thrive on our mountain slopes here.

    Highlands University

    The New Mexico Highlands University Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra presents a concert at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. in the university’s Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

    The award-winning mariachi group will perform a variety of musical selections, including huapangos, rancheras, boleros and sones. The group will also perform a number of classic mariachi Christmas songs as well as arrangements of Christmas songs for mariachi.

    • The Interested Ladies of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority Inc. Toy Drive for the children of Las Vegas this Holiday Season. The donated toys will be distributed on Dec. 8. Donations boxes are located at Douglas Hall and the Student Center on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University for donations through Dec. 7.   • On Nov. 27, Esperanza Home Health Care and Hospice in Buena Vista completed their 22nd year in serving the area. At present, they are serving Mora, San Miguel, Colfax, and Harding counties. The staff covers more than 100 miles in their duties.
