    Those who like to make art out of doors or who think they might like to try it are invited to register for the first Las Vegas Paint Out, today (Wednesday) through Saturday.  The Las Vegas Plein Air Club and the Las Vegas Arts Council are coordinating this outdoor painting event to inspire local artists and to introduce others to our unique town and its environs.

    • Story Time at Carnegie Library, 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the children’s area of the public library. This week’s book is “Okomi Plays in the Leaves” by Helen and Clive Dorman. This week’s theme is “Fall Leaves.” Free and open to the public.

    • San Miguel County offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 8, in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. Wells Fargo bank locations will be open that day as will the Las Vegas Optic offices.
    • The Las Vegas Area Association of Educational Retirees October meeting, 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 8 at the Plaza Hotel / Conservatory. Post-mortem review of the 2012 NMAER State Convention is the topic for this meeting. For more information, contact Tomás at 575-421-2455.

    •  Al-Anon Meetings for family and friends of alcoholics or problem drinkers take place in Faith Hall, behind St. Paul's Peace Church, 8th and National, at 5:45 p.m. on Mondays and noon on Fridays for an hour. Many relatives and/or friends of problem drinkers have learned through Al-Anon how to make their own lives more manageable, serene and happy whether or not the relative or friend stops drinking.  For information, call 425-6901.

    • The City of Las Vegas Waste Water Treatment Facility will stop providing effluent reuse water for residential customers beginning at 3 p.m. on Oct. 5. The approval from the New Mexico Environment Department under the city’s DP-1118, Part V, allowed this use only for the 2012 growing season. Direct any questions to the Utilities Department at 454-3832.

  • Chacon is a very good place to live. Many people there make it to 80 years and beyond.

    Nora Lopez is one of them.

    Her children and grand children held a surprise birthday party for her on her 80th birthday last week.

    The family and many friends and neighbors from Chacon and Mora gathered at the VFW hall to honor her with the big celebration. She was happily surprised as she was escorted into the building and found that they had completely fooled her on the reason for the ride to Mora.
