  • The calendar says it’s January 15th, and that translates into a very cold start to our new year. It was 12 degrees below zero last night, and it is 15 degrees above zero as I write this. Mark Twain noted that he never knew water could make a river so beautiful. I could paraphrase that with “ I never knew below zero temperatures for a long period of time could make ice so hard.” Yes our creeks are almost frozen solid and running water is hard to find.

  • The Mora VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary had a busy weekend.

On Saturday, the Mora VFW was host to the Dist. 5  meeting at the VFW Center in Mora.

The ladies assisted them by decorating the tables with flags and flowers and serving lunch prepared by Commander Melvin Vigil’s family.

More than 30 people attended. They came from Raton, Clayton and Mora. Cerro and Las Vegas were not represented. After the meal,  the comrades held their meeting, which included reports and plans for the future.

  • Yes, winter has arrived in our mountains. The days are short, The temperature rarely gets to 40 degrees in the warmest part of the day, and it is cold to colder at night, often below zero. The folks who predicted a warm winter missed their mark I’d say. Global warming hasn’t hit here yet.

I gave up on making New Year resolutions a long time ago.
